Bunnies Bite Back: Inside the “Robotic” Bedroom of Hugh Hefner

Hef launched a sexual revolution, but after 50 years the magic left his bedroom

In recent years, several former Playboy Bunnies have come forward with disturbing accounts of their experiences with Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, shedding light on the darker aspects of life at the Playboy Mansion. These revelations challenge the glamorous image long associated with the Playboy brand.

Holly Madison, who dated Hefner from 2001 to 2008, has been particularly vocal about her negative experiences. In her memoir, Down the Rabbit Hole, Madison described the group sexual encounters at the mansion as "disgusting" and something she "hated," noting that she made her discomfort known .

She also recounted the pressure to participate in these activities, fearing expulsion from the mansion if she refused. Madison likened the environment to a "cult" and revealed that Hefner would often have photographs taken of her and other girlfriends when they were intoxicated, which he allegedly used as a form of control.

Sondra Theodore, Hefner's girlfriend from 1976 to 1981, shared similar sentiments. She recalled that Hefner's increasing demands became overwhelming, stating, "He scared me a lot at the end because you couldn't satisfy him – he had to have more and more and more."

Theodore felt objectified, saying, "I might as well have been a vibrator, I might as well have been a sex toy – because that's what it was"

Bridget Marquardt, another former girlfriend, described Hefner's bedroom as "hoarder-style," with clutter and pornographic videos playing on large screens. She and Madison both noted the lack of intimacy and the mechanical nature of their sexual encounters with Hefner.

Crystal Hefner, Hefner's widow, echoed these observations, describing their sex life as "robotic" and devoid of emotion.

These accounts paint a troubling picture of life at the Playboy Mansion, contrasting sharply with the public image of glamour and liberation. The women's testimonies highlight issues of coercion, manipulation, and emotional abuse, prompting a reevaluation of Hefner's legacy and the culture he cultivated.
